In partnership with the Peruvian Trade Commission and the expertise of the Lionesque Group, El Mercado Peru opened its first Pop-Up store in New York City at the Roger Smith Hotel from October 18th through November 15th.

Conceived by New York based Peruvian designers Michelle Peglau and Andrea Bocchio, El Mercado is a platform to introduce the best of Peruvian design to the sophisticated New Yorker. “We want to lift the veil into the Peruvian experience, beyond what your first thoughts about Peru are.” -says Peglau. With the word mercado meaning market in Spanish; El Mercado Peru is an immersive and curated marketplace with product selections ranging from accessories, baby, home and the gourmet kitchen.

Andrea Bocchio designs

Bocchio herself designs textile based jewelry and accessories inspired by travel and traditional craft. Based in Brooklyn she works with female inmates at the Santa Monica Penitentiary in Lima, offering them fair trade wages to help empower them through their craft. Items include bold crochet necklaces, colorful woven necklaces, embroidered pouches and knit patterned scarves.

Llama Coffee

For the home, the duo has curated Kus’Art’s collection of tabletop and vessels consisting of free form shapes that nod back to old-world craftsmanship for people with a discerning eye and a taste for history. And, for the kitchen, they tapped Limanjar, a New York-based online bakery that celebrates the refined confectionary tradition from Lima, Peru for their delicious alfajores, making for a delicious pairing with the environmentally sustainable Llama Coffee.
